Usackas: Lithuania and Belarus both should maintain national identity

Vygaudas Usackas met on Tuesday with the Lithuanian community in Lida, Rymdziuny and Gervyaty in Belarus, informs LETA.

The Minister Usackas noted that the Lithuanian community which historically formed in Belarus ensured strong ties between Lithuania and Belarus.

"These ties should be further developed. It is important not only with regard to the heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, but other today's projects as well," Usackas said.

The Minister for Foreign Affaires asked the local authorities of Rymdziuny to consider the applications of Lithuanians residing there concerning of the education of Lithuanians, necessity of ensuring the adequate level of Lithuanian language teaching at the local Lithuanian school.

"Lithuania and Belarus should ensure possibilities of maintaining national identity for Lithuanians and Belarusian's living in the two countries," Minister Usackas emphasized.
