Polish Solidarity icon may host round-table talks in Minsk

Leaders of the Belarusian opposition parties announced ahead of the country's September parliamentary elections that they would like Poland's former president and Solidarity icon Lech Walesa to host the round table negotiations aimed at solving the current political crisis in Belarus.

According to democratic opposition leader Aleksander Milinkiewicz, such negotiations are the only viable way out of the crisis. The appeal for round table talks in Minsk to be chaired by the former Solidarity leader has already been signed by the leaders of the opposition, including Vincuk Viachorka, Stanislau Shushkevich and Anatoly Lebedko.

Analysts point out that sharing power may turn out to be the only possible way to survive in politics for Lukashenka as his hitherto most powerful ally - Russia - has recently been giving signals that it is going to stop financing his regime.
