MINSK, Aug 2 (Prime-Tass) -- Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday that his country would repay its debt for Russian natural gas in the coming days, ITAR-TASS reported.
"I have ordered the government to take U.S. $460 million from a reserve fund and to pay Russia for gas," Lukashenko said, as quoted by ITAR-TASS.
The statement comes just one day after Russian natural gas monopoly Gazprom announced it was cutting supplies to Belarus by 45% starting Friday due to the outstanding debt.
Gazprom said that Belarus owed it $456.16 million for gas supplied in January-June. The 45% cut would bring gas supplies down to the value of what Minsk was actually paying, Gazprom said.
