Gazprom delays gas supplies cut after confirming Belarus' debt payment

Russian gas giant Gazprom delayed a reduction in supplies to Belarus by one week after it confirmed Friday that Belarus had made a 190-million-U.S.-dollar installment toward its 460 million dollars debt, the company said in a statement.

"Belarus has today made a considerable payment as part of its debt to Gazprom for gas supplies in the first six months of 2007," the state-controlled energy giant was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying. "Therefore, the Russian company has delayed cuts in gas supplies to consumers in Belarus."

Gazprom is expecting the full debt repayment within one week and timely payments for current gas supplies, Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov said.

Belarussian gas pipeline company Beltransgaz announced Friday the first installment of the debt had been paid to Gazprom.
