Belarus not to hike gasoline price this year

The price of gasoline will not increase in Belarus until the end of this year, Mikhail Osipenko, the deputy chief of Belarus' oil and chemistry concern Belneftekhim, told a press conference in Minsk. The crude oil price for domestic businesses has already risen 30 percent since the beginning of 2006, while retail prices of petroleum products went up only by 10 percent, he said. Osipenko also noted that the government was doing what it could to curb price growth, and that consumers were understanding of the changes in prices.

The deputy chief also stated that for some time now the crude price was steady above $70 a barrel. By using a conversion factor, one may calculate how much oil would cost for Belarus if it were not for the republic's alliance with the Russian Federation, Osipenko stressed.
