Chernobyl children enjoy holiday

Children from Belarus have been enjoying a holiday in England 20 years after the Chernobyl disaster.

The ground in their homeland is so contaminated with the fall-out from the world's worst nuclear disaster that they live with the constant fear of illness.

But the charity Chernobyl Children's Project has arranged for children aged between eight and 13 to spend four weeks with British families.

The children's immune systems have been weakened as a result of the Chernobyl fall-out and some surveys suggest their life expectancy could be just 32 years but the trip could extend that estimate by up to two years by boosting their defences.
