Joint action against Lukashenko

The prime ministers of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine have agreed to set up a joint working party to coordinate policy towards the troublesome state of Belarus.

Telephone conversations between Prime Minister Marek Belka, Lithuania's Algridas Brazauskas, Latvia's Aigars Kalvitis and Ukraine's Julia Timoshenko have discussed the initiative.

Lithuanian president Algirdas Brazauskas said in a radio interview that the joint working group is not a conspiracy against Belarus. He stressed that all EU members would like to see Minsk embrace democracy. Ukraine, which has adopted a pro-western orientation after the recent orange revolution, would like democratic processes to begin in Belarus, says our Kiev correspondent Halyna Pastushuk.

The four countries support plans to launch independent radio broadcasts to Belarus.

The EU has allocated 130.000 euros for radio and internet broadcasts to Belarus, which will begin in the Russian language, but will later use also Belarussian.
