Belarus Communists, Like San Francisco Communists, Hate Pillow Fights

By Peter Jamison,

Kidding! We know that, no matter what Bill O'Reilly thinks, San Francisco isn't really run by communists. At least not exclusively.

Still, after the travails our fair city has been through with irresponsible flash mobs converging on Justin Herman Plaza for massive pillow fights, we were tickled by some news today out of Belarus (a country that really is run by communists, and nasty ones, at that).

The Associated Press reports that "club-wielding police" broke up a pillow fight among some 400 young people in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, that glorious San Francisco of the East. The gathering was intended to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, at which Belarusians repelled Catholic crusaders.

As SF Weekly's Joe Eskenazi reported in February, city officials are none too happy with our own annual Valentine's Day pillow fight, which has cost the city about $35,000 in cleanup costs -- think lots of down feathers and highly paid public employees on overtime -- over the past two years.

Still, there's no sign that San Francisco's leaders plan to resort to state-sponsored violence to suppress the event -- unless wacky Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko somehow gets himself elected to the Board of Supervisors. Who knows? We hear the field is wide open in District 6.
