A Belarus national was sentenced today to just over seven years in federal prison for leading a multi-million-dollar operation that brought in more than 1,000 illegal immigrants to work resort and downtown hotels and railroad yards.
Viktar Krus ran his conspiracy through 20 different corporations, grossing $34 million, while evading millions in taxes and wiring millions more to his homeland. Krus pleaded guilty to four charges and will be deported after serving his 87-month prison term.
U.S. District Judge Mark S. Davis noted that Krus could have made millions legitimately, but chose greed.
"Look what you did," a bewildered Davis asked at this morning's sentencing.
Krus apologized to the entire nation.
"I will learn my hard lesson," he said. "I'm really sorry for this."
