SCARBOROUGH (July 24, 2008): Police will not file charges against the 20-year-old motorist who struck a young Belarusian woman as she was bicycling home from work on July 3, causing the injuries that claimed her life six days later.

Sviatlana Auseichyk, 18, died July 9 at Maine Medical Center from complications from injuries sustained in the crash.

Auseichyk, a university student in Minsk, Belarus, was working at the Dunstan Schoolhouse Restaurant through a work-study program. She was riding to the Blue Haven Motor Court, where she lived, with two other eastern European students when the accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m.

Police say Auseichyk was attempting to cross the road on her bicycle when she was struck. Her roommate, Lena Maiseyeva, 19, who witnessed the crash, said she did not see the car coming.

Police identified the driver as 20-year-old Peter Juarez of Scarborough. A person in Juarez's home hung up on telephone calls seeking comment.
