Belarus opposition leader sentenced to 5 years

On Thursday a court in Belarus sentenced opposition presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin to 5 and a half years behind bars for hooliganism and organizing civic unrest.

He was charged during the presidential elections earlier this year. Kazulin himself called the sentence "political." Kazulin is a professor and former dean of the Belarus State University. He ran against three-term president Alyaksandr Lukashenka together with another opposition candidate whose first name is also Alyaksandr - Milinkevych.
