Belarus to siphon off European customers' gas from Russia

Belarus will siphon off European customers' gas from Russia if Moscow further reduces gas deliveries, says the first deputy Belarusian Prime Minister Vladimir Semashko in a letter to the Gazprom management.

The RIA-Novosti news agency quotes the letter as saying that Belarus requests Gazprom to abstain from further reductions in gas supplies until the conflict situation is settled. Otherwise Belarus will have to siphon off the gas that's transited across Belarus to Europe, to fully meet the Belarusian economy and population needs.

Earlier the official spokesman for Gazprom Sergei Kupriyanov offered his assurances at a news conference on the crisis situation around gas supplies to Belarus that Russia would bend every effort to ensure that European consumers' interests would not be harmed if Belarus started siphoning off the transited gas.
