Russia cuts off Belarus gas supplies over unpaid debt dispute

* From: AAP

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told the head of gas giant Gazprom to prepare to reduce gas supplies to neighbor Belarus by 85 percent from 9.00am local time (4.00pm AEST) today, Russian news agencies have reported.

"Begin an appropriate procedure," Medvedev was quoted as saying after Gazprom's Alexei Miller told the Kremlin chief that Belarus had failed to settle an outstanding gas debt.

Russian gas giant Gazprom said last week Belarus owed it US$192 million in unpaid debts and gas exports would be reduced by 85 percent from 06:00 GMT on Monday if the debt was not settled.
