Russian Gazprom threatens to cut Belarus gas 85 pct

MOSCOW, June 17 (Reuters) - Russian gas firm Gazprom said on Thursday it may cut gas supplies to Belarus by 85 percent on June 21 if the country fails to pay $192 million in debt owed to Gazprom.

"Taking into account the cost of the gas already supplied in June and the size of the debt, it was decided that the reduction will equal 85 percent," a Gazprom statement quoted CEO Alexei Miller as saying.

"The remaining 15 percent will allow Belarus to maintain its gas pipeline system in working order until the debt is fully repaid."
