Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan to seek WTO accession as one

MOSCOW, Jun 9 (Prime-Tass) -- Russia will stop individual talks on its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and will start talks on accession as a single customs union with Belarus and Kazakhstan, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Tuesday at a meeting of the Eurasian Economic Community's (EurAsEC) intergovernmental council.

Putin cited a joint statement of the three countries.

He said that the three countries would inform the WTO about their intention to start a negotiating process for membership as a single customs union.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia had not abandoned its intention to join the WTO, even though the process has dragged on for a long time, ITAR-TASS reported Tuesday, citing the president's press secretary Natalya Timakova.

Russia has been negotiating on its WTO accession since 1993, but its talks have been delayed by various issues, including its war with Georgia in August 2008.
