MINSK, June 30 (Reuters) - A U.S. senator visiting Belarus said on Tuesday the ex-Soviet republic could be about to free Emmanuel Zeltser, a U.S. lawyer convicted of industrial espionage, a key element in restoring ties between Washington and Minsk.

Senator Benjamin Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland, said President Alexander Lukashenko had told a Congressional delegation that Zeltser could even be released later in the day. (Reporting by Andrei Makhovsky in Minsk, writing by James Kilner in Moscow)
