Local Chernobyl program cancelled

Kids suffering from the after effects of the Chernobyl disaster won't be coming to the area this summer.

The Chatham-Kent, Essex and Lambton Chernobyl Children Fund had to cancel its health respite program, due to the Belarusian government implementing travel restrictions.

According to a media release from the CKEL Chernobyl Children Fund, this response was due to a visiting child not returning from the U.S.

The Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster occurred in 1986, with Belarus receiving most of the radiation. Cancer and birth defects are still prevalent in the region.

The local chapter has offered the six-week respite program since 1996.

In the release, it states the Canadian government is working to negotiate an agreement with Belarus.

The chapter will continue to provide orphan and family support in the country, along with diabetes educational camps.
