Belarus asks the European Union for financial support

MINSK, June 24 (Itar-Tass) - Belarus has addressed the European Union for financial assistance, Finance Minister Andrei Kharkovets told reporters on Wednesday.

"We've submitted the request and are now waiting for an appropriate reaction. I believe that within ten days we will have the first reaction," he said.

He noted that the Belarusian side has not yet been discussing Russia's disbursement of a 500-million-dollar loan to Belarus.

"We still do not discuss this issue. We will wait for the reaction of the International Monetary Fund that will confirm correctness of our policy. This is what we can take to the talks with Russian counterparts," Kharkovets said.

Meanwhile, the National Bank of Belarus expects that the council of directors of the IMF at its meeting at the end of June will take an affirmative decision on increasing the financial support for the republic by 1 billion U.S. dollars.

"Supposedly, the council of directors will meet on June 29 and we hope for an affirmative decision," the deputy head of the National Bank of Belarus, Nikolai Luzgin, said.

He underlined that Belarus fulfilled all conditions of the IMF. Recently it took a decision to expand the corridor for the Belarusian rouble fluctuations in the currency basket up to 10 percent.
