Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus received representatives of the Trust Fund of the European Humanities University: Halldor Asgrimsson, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Professor Anatoli Mikhailov, Rector of the European Humanities Universtity, and Evaldas Ignatavicius, Undersecretary of the Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday.

The president underlined in the meeting that a major achievement of the European Humanities University rested in the fact that the University kept growing and was becoming stronger and stronger and increasingly popular not only among Belarusian youth but also among other young people who wanted to acquire higher education by studying in the Russian language.

According to President Adamkus, the support offered by Lithuania, other European countries, the United States of America, the Nordic Council of Ministers and the European Commission to this exiled University is extremely important as it enables Belarusian students to acquire academic and life experience in one of the EU Members States and to share it back with their fellow-countrymen.

The head of state also pointed out that the support offered by Lithuania to the academic community of the European Humanities University was contributing to bringing Belarus closer to the EU.

The president said the European Humanities University, which strengthens its roots in Lithuania and constantly improves the quality of studies, may become one of the best humanities universities in the eastern region.

On Tuesday, Vilnius hosts the second Donor Assembly of the EHU Trust Fund. The purpose of the Assembly is to attract donor funds for the University and discuss further donor actions to ensure sustainable and smooth financing of the European Humanities University.

Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius also welcomed the participants of the Donor Assembly.

"I am very happy that we have invited the European Humanities University to move to Vilnius. We made a decision to help this university because we saw big sense in investing into independent, European education of young Belarusians," claimed Kubilius.

According to the prime minister, the successful activities of the university would have been impossible not only without Lithuania, but also without the help of the European Commission, the Nordic Council of Ministers and many other countries, organizations and funds supporting this Belarusian university.
