Minsk calls illegitimate CSTO Moscow summit decisions

MINSK, June 14 (Itar-Tass) -- Minsk calls illegitimate the decisions made at the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Moscow summit due to the absence of consensus.

Belarusian Foreign Ministry press secretary Andrei Popov called 'absurd' suppositions that Belarus might have wanted to undermine the unity of CSTO member states.

"The refusal of our country to take part in the CSTO Moscow summit is not a whim, let alone a wish to damage this organization. Obviously, decisions cannot be made without consensus of all CSTO member countries. Belarus had to make a statement to the CSTO Secretariat when officials of a member state said that the absence of one member from the meeting could be ignored and the documents could be approved without it," Popov said.

"This is an attempt to ignore the stance of an CSTO member country and a fundamental rule of the organization, which says that all the decisions must be made with consensus and the opinion of all member states must be taken into consideration in such important matters as security," he said.

The reason for Belarus' absence from the CSTO Moscow summit is its strong disagreement "with the possibility to make decisions targeted for stronger military and political security at the time when economic security of one member is openly being undermined," Popov said.

"The statement to the CSTO Secretariat, which affirmed the lack of consensus at the Moscow meeting, once again showed that it was impermissible to ignore the position of a member country and decisions made despite the opinion of a member were illegitimate," he said.
