Bicycle drive held at hospital for Belarussian orphans

Jennifer Hopson, a Caledon volunteer with Canadian Aid for Chernobyl (CAC) and Registered Nurse at the new Brampton Civic Hospital, is asking the citizens of Brampton and Caledon to donate their gently-used bicycles to a good cause.

Since 1998, food parcels and humanitarian aid have been personally delivered to impoverished families and the many orphanages in Belarus by CAC.

The event will take place on Saturday, June 21 at the Brampton Civic Hospital in parking lot six, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mechanically fit bicycles of all sizes are urgently needed.

In 1986, Belarus was terribly devastated by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The most vulnerable victims are the children.

Many children are placed in orphanages because of premature parental death due to radiation, abuse as a result of parental alcoholism, and some simply because parents are unable to provide the necessities such as food.

Sadly, most orphanages are overcrowded such as Kostukovichi, which has only 15 bicycles for 150 children.

Please help put smiles on the faces of the children of Belarus by contributing bicycles you no longer need.
