Gintas Zegeris arrested in Belarus for purported mediation in bribing

Vilnius resident Gintas Zegeris working in wood processing business in Belarus is forces to experience the bed in the KGB custody. Last week he was arrested for purported mediation in bribing, writes Lietuvis Rytos.

Zegeris, who has been working in Belarus for over 10 years and hold a permit for permanent living in this country, was arrested by KGB officers on June 3. His business partner Michail Savelizon was arrested too. Zegeris" former wife Ilona Zegeriene living in Minsk told the daily Lietuvos Rytas that an official charge has not been imposed on him yet.

Lithuanian diplomats can visit Zegeris only when he, as a Lithuanian national, officially asks for consular assistance. Until then, in line with the law, diplomats, even if they know about the arrest of the Lithuanian national, cannot take any measures. Lithuanian Ambassador to Belarus Edminas Bagdonas told on Monday that Zegeris" request for consular help had not been received yet.
