Union State PA supports Belarus’ initiative to develop customs infrastructure programme

Deputies of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russian Union State supported an initiative of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Belarus to draw up a new customs infrastructure programme of the Union State, reported Belta. A joint session of the Parliamentary Assembly commissions took place in Grodno on June 23.

The chairman of the PA economic policy commission Oleg Tolkachev said that the goals set out in the Union State customs infrastructure programmes 2002-2007 and the programme on the Union State external border infrastructure development have been met successfully. At the same there is a need to start a programme on further development of customs infrastructure, he said.

“The new programme should take into account both quantitative and qualitative sides of the development,” Oleg Tolkachev said. For example, today we need to accelerate the work on installing X-ray devices for customs clearance to reduce the time needed for customs control. There are other issues which we need to respond to, he said.

Union State MPs recommended the Union State Customs Committee to develop and carry out practical measures in 2008-2009 to shift customs control to the external border of the Union State. They also recommended the Union State Border Committee to speed up the implementation of the external border infrastructure development programme 2007-2011.
