Cardinal Bertone arrives in Belarus

Minsk, Jun. 19, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (bio - news) arrived in Belarus on June 18 for a visit that will continue through Sunday, June 22.

The Secretary of State is the highest Vatican official ever to travel to Belarus, a country with strong political and social ties to Russia. Cardinal Bertone has been in Belarus on one previous occasion, in 1997, when he was serving as secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

During his stay, the Italian prelate will meet with President Aleksander Lukashenko, the foreign ministry of Belarus has confirmed. He will also speak with the country's foreign minister and minister of religious affairs, and with the Orthodox Patriarch Filaret.

Cardinal Bertone will preside at the consecration of the first Catholic church to be built in the capital city, Minsk, since 1910. His visit is evidence of a warming toward Catholicism by the government of Belarus, which has heavily favored the established Orthodox Church.
