Vatican Secretary Of State Visits Belarus

MINSK (AFP)--The Holy See's Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone arrived in Minsk Wednesday for a four-day official visit and talks with Belarus's political and religious leaders.

Bertone was due to meet with Belarus's President, Alexander Lukashenko, Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov, as well as Belarus's Orthodox Exarch Metropolitan Filaret and representatives of Belarus's Catholic bishops' conference, according to the Belarussian foreign ministry.

"I intend to meet with representatives of Belarus's Orthodox and Catholic Churches and authorities in order to discuss bilateral ties and Belarus's place in the international community," the cardinal told reporters upon arrival.

Catholics make up some 15% of Belarus's population.
