For now, affairs of the state can wait

(Essdras M Suarez/Globe Staff)

Stanislaw Shushkevich, who alongside Boris Yeltsin signed away the Soviet Union in 1991, has spent the last decade opposing Alexander Lukashenko, strong-armed president of Belarus.

Shushkevich, 73, invites his visitors in for talk about Russian meddling, and about how Belarus can still find a place between west and east.

First, though, he searches kitchen cupboards for cups and saucers, sugar and spoons. He boils water. It is early yet, so before conversation, Shushkevich pours the coffee.
