Belarusian Ambassador in Damascus - Statement on Occasion of National Day

Damascus, (SANA) - The Republic of Belarus is currently celebrating independence, which marks an important turning point in the history of this country.

On this occasion, Belarusian Ambassador in Damascus Vladimir Lapato Zigorsky gave a special statement to SANA in which he affirmed the strength of relations between the two countries, especially following the two official visits of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to Syria.

The Ambassador stated that his country shares Syria's concern over regional developments particularly in Iraq, stressing that both Syria and Belarus were against the war on Iraq from the beginning.

The Ambassador affirmed his country's support of Syria's demands for restoring the occupied Golan and establishing just and comprehensive peace. He also stated that Belarus supports the Palestinian people's right to restore their land.

In addition, the Ambassador praised the developmental rise in Syria in the field of economic and social reform, stating that establishing security and stability in the region is vital to economic growth.

Regarding economic relations, the Ambassador said that trade exchange between the two country has amounted to 50 million dollars. He also stated that Syria has great investments opportunities, and that Belarus is looking forward to increase its investment in Syria.

He also affirmed the importance of academic and cultural cooperation between the two countries, noting that there are many Syrian students in Belarusian universities.

The Ambassador expressed his country's relief over the mass rallying around President Bashar al-Assad during the referendum for a new constitutional term. He also praised Syria's role in receiving Belarusian families that came from Lebanon to Syria during Israel's aggression on Lebanon, expressing his country's gratitude to Syria's government and people.
