Belarus Asked to Extradite Bakiyev

The Belarussian Prosecutor General's Office said Tuesday that it had received an extradition request fr om Kyrgyzstan for ousted Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Interfax reported.

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko earlier said his country would not send Bakiyev back home, wh ere he is wanted in connection with violent clashes that resulted in his ouster in April.

Also Tuesday, Kyrgyz prosecutors asked Latvian authorities to assist them in arresting Bakiyev's 32-year-old son, Maxim, on fraud charges. Prosecutors said Maxim Bakiyev was believed to be in Latvia.
