Azerbaijan, Belarus keen to boost trade

Azerbaijani-Belarusian trade has increased four-fold since 2006, the deputy PM told the opening of the Belarus National Exhibition in Baku today.

Andrey Kobjakov said that bilateral trade was worth some $130 million in 2009.

'The presidents of Azerbaijan and Belarus have set the objective of increasing trade to $500m and $1bn in the future,' Kobjakov said.

He said about 150 Belarusian enterprises, many from the agricultural or mechanical engineering sector, were exhibiting in Baku.

'At the exhibition visitors can familiarize themselves with everything that Belarus has and everything that it can offer Azerbaijan. We hope the event will strengthen ties between our countries,' the Belarusian deputy prime minister said.

In turn, Azerbaijani First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyubbov said that trade in 2009 grew 1.6 fold over 2008. 'The growth in trade with Belarus exceeds the figures for other CIS countries,' Eyubov said.
