Velcom launches 3.1Mbps mobile broadband service

Belarusian mobile operator Velcom, which is backed by the Telekom Austria Group, has announced the launch of a mobile broadband internet service in the country in partnership with another domestic mobile communication services provider, BelCel. The new service will be based on CDMA450 1xEV-DO Rev A technology and promises to deliver data rates of up to 3.1Mbps, Telekom Austria said in a press release. Velcom has entered into an exclusive agreement with Belcel, the Belarusian mobile communications joint venture of BelTelecom and CIBBV, Netherlands, which is assigning its mobile broadband retail business to Velcom in exchange for a 50% revenue share. 'With this cooperation Velcom once again brings innovation and convenience to the market. This agreement provides our customers with a mature mobile broadband service and a future proof option to upgrade, once even more advanced technology becomes available in Belarus,' said Helmut Duhs, chief executive officer of Velcom. 'The cooperation concluded today allows BelCel to increase quality and capacity of its network significantly while customer service and sales of EV-DO mobile broadband services will be handled by Velcom', added Konstantin Tikar, general director of Beltelecom jointly with Fayez Al Araj, chairman of BelCel.
