Belarus president won't attend EU summit

The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, will not attend the European Union summit in Prague on Thursday. He had been invited to do so by the Czech Republic, currently the Chair of the EU. The summit will discuss cooperation between the EU and its eastern neighbours. Belarus is not a member of the union.

Mr Lukashenko's attitudes to human rights and democracy have made him a controversial figure and the Netherlands, in particular, was fiercely opposed to his attending the summit.

No reason has been given for his decision not to attend.
