FM Liberman on official visit to Russia and Belarus

FM Liberman will meet with senior officials of Russia and Belarus, and discuss bilateral and regional issues.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman will leave tomorrow (Monday, 1 June 2009) on an official visit to Moscow. This will be FM Liberman's first visit to Russia, which is taking place within the framework of his first round of visits to foreign capitals since taking office.

During his visit, FM Liberman will meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, with other senior officials and with heads of the Jewish community. During his meeting with his Russian counterpart, FM Lavrov, FM Liberman will sign a protocol that includes a long list of consultations that took place, that are taking place and that are planned to take place in the future, between the foreign ministries of both countries.

FM Liberman will also discuss issues such as political developments and regional threats with his hosts. The parties will discuss the establishment of a bilateral strategic dialogue, which will be led on the Israeli side by FM Liberman. In addition, they will discuss the bilateral relationship between Israel and Russia, which is currently developing and expanding at an accelerated pace.

After his visit to Russia, FM Liberman will travel to Minsk, where he will meet on Thursday (4 June 2009) with the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, with Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov, with other senior officials and with heads of the Jewish community.

FM Liberman will discuss a range of issues concerning the bilateral relationship, such as economic and cultural cooperation. FM Liberman will also express Israel's concern with the Iranian threat, which is a severe geopolitical threat to Israel and the entire region.

FM Liberman is expected to return to Israel on Friday, 5 June 2009.
