Belarus seeks stronger economic ties with Vietnam

Belarus attaches great importance to promoting multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, said Belarus Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky while receiving National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong in Minsk on April 30. The PM acknowledged the positive development of bilateral cooperation in recent times, especially in economics and trade following the signing of a number of agreements, including those on double tax avoidance and investment assistance. He said that the Belarus-Vietnam inter-governmental commission adopted a long-term cooperation programme until 2012, paving the way for their relations to grow and flourish in many areas. While participating in an expo held in Hanoi recently, many big Belarus companies signed deals with their Vietnamese counterparts, including contracts to build automobile and tractor manufacturing plants in Vietnam. The PM lauded cooperative ties between the two legislative bodies and said that the signing of an cooperation agreement during Mr Trong's visit will give fresh impetus to Belarus-Vietnam relations bilaterally and multilaterally in future. For his part, Mr Trong said that the two countries should boost cooperation in economics, trade, investment, science-technology, education and training to make the most of their potential. He reiterated Vietnam's consistent policy of further strengthening the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Belarus for mutual benefit. The same day, Mr Trong met with President Alexander Lukasenko who praised Vietnam's role in the Asia-Pacific region and asked the country to help Belarus penetrate this large market. He recalled his recent visit to Vietnam during which the two countries signed many agreements, and affirmed that Belarus will strictly carry out these agreements to broaden cooperative ties. He suggested that both Belarus and Vietnam increase their economic, trade and investment ties which remain modest compared to their potential. Mr Trong said that the National Assembly and people of Vietnam will do their utmost to cement the traditional ties with Belarus to meet the two countries' aspiration.
