Belarus to assume presidency of CIS premiers' council

Minsk, May 23 (RIA Novosti) Belarus will take on the rotating presidency of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) council of prime ministers at a session here Friday, the country's foreign ministry has said. Belarussian Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky has said his country will propose new initiatives to develop the CIS, an alliance of ex-Soviet states.

The agenda of the meeting to be held in the National Library will address migration, economic cooperation and crime control, the ministry said Thursday.

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko as well as Sidorsky is expected to attend the meeting.

A number of CIS prime ministers have already arrived in Minsk: Azerbaijan's Artur Rasizade, Georgia's Zurab Nogaideli, Kyrgyzstan's Almaz Atambayev and Tajikistan's Okil Okilov.

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have sent deputy premiers. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is expected to arrive Friday, along with Vasile Tarlev and Yulia Tymoshenko, prime ministers of Moldova and Ukraine, respectively.
