EU freezes Belarus bank accounts

The EU has frozen the financial assets of Belarusian politicians, including the country's president Alexander Lukashenko.

The move is an attempt to further undermine the regime following the contested election outcome in March.

In total, the EU has frozen the assets of 36 Minsk officials accused of voting irregularities.

These politicians, who include the ministers of justice, information and education, are already banned from travelling to the EU.

In a statement, the EU said it had decided to freeze "all funds and economic resources of persons who are responsible for the violations of international electoral standards and the crackdown on civil society and the democratic opposition in the context of the 19 March 2006 presidential elections."
