Belarus opposition chief released

The main opposition leader in Belarus, Alexander Milinkevich, has been released from jail after serving a 15-day sentence.

He and other opposition activists were arrested for staging an unauthorised rally in the capital Minsk. The others have also now been released.

President Alexander Lukashenko defeated Mr Milinkevich in March elections which were widely condemned as fraudulent.

Anti-Lukashenko slogans were shouted by activists at the opposition rally.

It was held to mark the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster which spread radiation across a swathe of Belarus.

The election brought Mr Lukashenko a third term - but observers and the opposition said the polls were neither free nor fair.

Belarussian courts jailed more than 150 opposition protesters following the resulting demonstrations.
