Belarus Activist Jailed for 5 Months

MINSK -- A Belarussian court jailed an opposition organizer for five months on Monday on charges of plotting to create disorder linked to the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko, a fellow activist said.

Sergei Lyashkevich, who worked on the campaign team of Lukashenko's main electoral rival, Alexander Milinkevich, was arrested five days before the March 19 election.

Sergei Malchik, an organizer for the opposition team in the western Grodno district, said the court ruled that Lyashkevich had instructed other activists how to act in case of street demonstrations.

"He was found guilty of showing films of demonstrations in Minsk and a cartoon of Lukashenko and of inviting two people to go to Minsk to attend a meeting with Milinkevich," Malchik said of proceedings in the town of Shchuchin.
