Belarus restricts airspace after volcano eruption

The ex-Soviet state of Belarus has imposed major restrictions on its airspace and cancelled several flights due to the ash cloud from the Iceland volcano eruption, officials said Saturday.

"Belarus is restricting the movement of planes in its airspace at a height of 7,000-11,000 metres (23,000-36,000 feet)," a ministry of transport spokesman told state television.

A spokesman at Minsk's international airport Minsk-2 told AFP that while several flights had been cancelled Saturday a flight to Moscow had taken off and others to southern Europe were delayed rather than cancelled.
