Belarusian Opposition Activist Arrested

VAUKAVYSK, Belarus -- An activist of the Belarusian opposition United Civic Party (AHP) was detained by police in the western town of Vaukavysk, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Vital Hulyak was arrested on April 23 while distributing leaflets with the slogan "Tell the Truth." Hulyak was taken to a police station.

He told RFE/RL the police confiscated nearly 700 leaflets from him.

The leaflets explained the AHP's position regarding the current political and socioeconomic situation in Belarus on the eve of local elections scheduled for April 25.

According to Hulyak, an officer from Vaukavysk's local branch of the Interior Ministry approached him on April 22 and warned him "to refrain from any antigovernment actions during the election campaign."
