Belarus leader says ousted Kyrgyz President Bakiyev is in Minsk

MINSK, Belarus (AP) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says the ousted president of Kyrgyzstan is in Minsk.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev fled Kyrgyzstan during a bloody uprising on April 7 and had taken refuge in neighboring Kazakhstan. He left Kazakhstan on Monday for a destination that had not been clear.

Lukashenko said Sunday that Bakiyev would be welcome in his country, which could exacerbate Belarus' tensions with the West as well as its difficult relations with neighboring Russia.

Lukashenko said in televised remarks Tuesday that Bakiyev was being protected in the Belarusian capital.

Bakiyev was deposed after the uprising in Bishkek, in which 83 people died after government forces opened fire on the crowds.
