Belarusian police disperse opposition rally

Associated Press

Belarusian police have broken up a protest of about 100 opposition activists demanding democratic reforms in this tightly-controlled former Soviet nation.

Some 200 riot police moved the activists from the capital's central square. An AP reporter saw police roughly pushing protesters, some of whom fell to the ground.

The demonstrators chanted "Freedom!" and "Belarus to Europe!"

Belarusian Popular Front leader Lyavon Barshchevsky said that the crackdown on protest reflected President Alexander Lukashenko's "dictatorial" approach to dissent.

Lukashenko has ruled the nation of 10 million since 1994, stifling dissent. Lukashenko has made some efforts to improve ties with the West in recent months, but the opposition says his authoritarian course has remained unchanged.
