No legal basis for S. Ossetia, Abkhazia to join Belarus-Russia Union -deputy secretary of state

MINSK. April 1 (Interfax) - The Standing Committee of the Union of Belarus and Russia sees no legal grounds for new members to join the union.

"At the present time, I cannot model a process of South Ossetia and Abkhazia joining the Union, because there are no legal grounds and procedures for new members to join the Union now," Vasily Khrol, a deputy secretary of state of the union, said at a press conference in Minsk on Wednesday.

He, however, did not rule out the possibility that South Ossetia and Abkhazia could in the future be granted associated membership of the union.

Khrol said he hoped that "the Belarusian parliament would soon consider the recognition of independence" of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Khrol refrained from assessing how important for the Belarus-Russia Union's development Belarus's possible recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia would be. "Time will show how the events develop," he said.
