MINSK - Viet Nam and Belarus should better supervise their ministries and departments implementing signed conventions and agreements, National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong said in Minks, Belarus yesterday.

Trong held discussions with Vladimir Andreichenko, the Speaker of House of Representatives in Belarus, during his visit.

The nations would continue working closely together on international fora, he said.

Andreichenko, who affirmed the importance of parliamentarian co-operation in boosting relations between the countries, said he expected Viet Nam's National Assembly would soon establish a team of Viet Nam-Belarus friendship legislators.

He also emphasised the need to effectively carry out signed conventions and agreements and tap the potential for co-operation among localities.

Andreichenko said the countries were capable of promoting ties through Belarus' s strengths in machinery and automobile manufacturing.

He also said he hoped goods from Belarus would get access to Asia Pacific countries via Viet Nam. Belarus would also be at a jumping-off point to help put Vietnamese goods into European markets.

The two sides also shared experiences in adopting measures to mitigate the impacts of the global economic downturn.

Trong also met Boris Batura, the chairman of the Council of the Republic of National Assembly of Belarus.

Batura said Viet Nam was a strategic partner of Belarus in the Asia-Pacific region and he was delighted to see ties expanding in areas such as science, technology and education.

Batura also agreed with Trong to improve ties on economics and trade and legislative exchanges.

Also yesterday, Trong, Andreichenko and Batura signed a co-operation agreement between their legislative bodies. Under the agreement, both sides pledged to boost co-operation which they believed would help develop the bilateral ties in many fields, including politics, economics, trade and tourism.

They would also support co-operation among localities and business owners and build legal frameworks for further co-operation.

They also agreed to keep each other abreast with the way they were writing and passing laws.

Each nation would form a parliamentary co-operation team to work with the other's national assembly and regularly exchange visits at different levels of their parliaments. They would also co-ordinate on ways to address global matters such as terrorism, drug, human trafficking and other trans-national crimes.

During a press conference, Trong, Andreichenko and Batura highlighted the significance of signing the agreement, which they considered as a new impetus to boost co-operation between the countries.

The nations were mulling the signing of three conventions to promote co-operation at local levels, between two central banks and in agriculture to match their potentials, they said.

Before arriving in Belarus, Trong met the Prime Minister of Czech, Mirek Topolanek, on Tuesday.

The prime minister said in the role of EU rotating presidency, Czech would help the development of EU-ASEAN relations. He also said Czech would expand co-operation with Viet Nam and not end the Official Development Assistance grant to Viet Nam. - VNS
