Future of European security addressed

MINSK, Belarus, April 29 (UPI) -- The Belarusian State University hosted a conference Wednesday aimed at opening an inclusive dialogue to address the future of European security.

The conference, backed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, was part of an ongoing effort to bring together top security authorities to discuss ways to handle potential threats to European security, the OSCE reported.

Officials said models for European security architecture along with current and potential future security concerns were at the top of the agenda.

"The recent past has painfully shown how dangerous it is to solve regional conflicts by force," Ambassador Hans-Jochen Schmidt, head of the OSCE office in Minsk, Belarus, said in a statement.

"We have to ensure that European security will not be dominated by unilateral and frequently confrontational approaches, particularly in the management of simmering regional conflicts. Such approaches fundamentally contradict the principle of cooperative security, to which the OSCE states committed themselves in the 1990 Charter of Paris."
