Difficult period for Belarusian economy will not end overnight, Lukashenka says

The current difficult period for the world and partly for the Belarusian economy will not end overnight, Alyaksandr Lukashenka said in his annual address to the nation and the National Assembly on April 23.

"We'll all have to work long and hard and close our ranks to defend and develop our country so that it can ensure conditions for safe, stable and happy life," Mr. Lukashenka said. "This is worth the exercise of patience."

The government will make every effort to ensure that "we survive all hardships in a worthy manner and come out of them stronger and more united than before," Mr. Lukashenka said. "Come to think of it, the current difficulties offer a unique chance to get rid of all the extraneous things that impede sustainable development. We simply must use this time to achieve a substantial breakthrough on all fronts."

People around the world and in Belarus are wondering what will happen to them, their families and jobs and whether they will be able to lead normal lives, rest and receive education, Mr. Lukashenka said. "I have repeatedly emphasized that although the crisis originated thousands of kilometers away from us and from Europe, its black wing has touched Belarus as well," he said. "This is the price of globalization and integration into the global economy. That's why we should say honestly and openly how we see the future of the country. We value people's trust and will never deceive them or leave them alone in trouble."

Even the best plans will remain unfulfilled if people meet them with apathy and indifference, Mr. Lukashenka said. "That's why no one now has the right to be complacent and try to adapt to the situation," he noted. It is necessary to preserve the atmosphere of trust between the government and the public, he added.
