Belarus, Vatican seek broader ties - Belarusian diplomat

Vatican, April 27, Interfax - Belarus and the Vatican are mutually interested in stepping up their cooperation in a variety of areas, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said following a meeting between Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Vatican State Secretary Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

"The parties expressed their mutual interest in boosting cooperation in areas such as science, culture and the management of archives and libraries," Sergey Aleinik, Belarusian deputy foreign minister and the country's ambassador to the Holy See, told journalists on Monday.

Lukashenko and Cardinal Bertone "discussed the details of signing a cooperation agreement between Belarus and the Vatican State," Aleinik said.

"Bertone expressed satisfaction with the development of bilateral cooperation between Belarus and the Vatican and thanked the president for his assistance in the activities of the Roman Catholic Church in Belarus," he said.
