Belarus and Latvia seek closer ties

Belarus's foreign minister, Syarhey Martynaw, has been visiting Latvia in order to forge closer ties between the two countries, Naviny.by has reported.

The eastern Europe nation supplies a number of goods to its Baltic neighbour, including rough timber, steel products and solvents.

However, relations between the two countries have not been as close as might be expected, with Mr Martynaw embarking on the first official visit by a Belarusian foreign minister to Riga in the last 11 years.

Recently, Latvian president Valdis Zatlers told Russian radio station that this is something which must change.

"Belarus is our neighbouring country. If you look at the map and think about the development of economic ties, trade, even energy issues, you will see that the country should not be left alone as an island on the continent," he said.

Recently, RIA Novosti reported that Latvia's foreign minister Maris Riekstins wants to make an official visit to Russia later this year in an attempt to strengthen ties between the two countries.
