Belarus must be a bridge between East, West - Lukashenko

MINSK. April 23 (Interfax) - Belarus must promote a balanced foreign policy in the international arena, based on a multi-vector principle, President Alexander Lukashenko said.

"Belarus pursues a balanced foreign policy, which rigorously protects and unswervingly promotes the national interests," Lukashenko said on Thursday in his annual address to the nation and parliament.

"We will not be manipulated by those who are trying to persuade us into believing that Belarus must choose between East and West and that this is an inevitable dilemma. Out task is to be a bridge between East and West," he said.

The Belarusian president noted with pleasure that, "in the period of global crisis, relations with the European Union are being ironed out and the partnership with Russian saved, an all this reflects the basic multi-vector principle of the country's international policy.

"Belarus will consistently advocate a stronger UN role in tackling global problems," he said.

"The tonality of our dialogue with Brussels is acquiring a new quality," he said. "Our relations with the European Union cannot be described as simple, but we both made them uneasy, and we must not be alone mending them. This process must be reciprocal," said Lukashenko.
