Russian, Belarusian DMs discuss military cooperation in Minsk

MINSK, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Defense ministers of Belarus and Russia discussed military cooperation within the framework of the Union State here on Tuesday.

"The joining of military potentials is an important security factor in the format of the CIS and CIS Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO)," the Interfax news agency quoted Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov as saying.

Belarusian Defense Minister Leonid Maltsev, in turn, said that "cooperation of Belarus and Russia in the military sphere is more than an advantage to both countries," according to the Itar-Tass news agency.

The two ministers have also approved the plan of a large-scale joint strategic military exercise scheduled for this fall during the meeting.

Moscow and Minsk have been working on creating a Union State since 1997, envisioning a common economic, customs, and political space.

The two countries signed on Feb. 3 an agreement on the joint protection of the Russia-Belarus Union State's airspace and the establishment of an integrated regional air defense network.
