Belarusian Opposition Plans 'Independence March'

MINSK -- The Belarusian opposition movement European Coalition plans to hold a so-called Independence March on May 14, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The march in Minsk will mark the 14th anniversary of the 1995 referendum that restored Belarus's Soviet-era national symbols -- including the flag and coat of arms -- and made Russian the official language of the country. Many Belarusian activists continue to question the results of the 1995 referendum.

The European Coalition's political bureau consists of the Young Front organization, the Party for Freedom and Progress, the At Once movement, and the organizing committee for the People's Society party.

The march organizers told RFE/RL that they plan to bring as many people as possible to Minsk's October Square, from where the marchers will move to Independence Square.
